How much bacteriostatic water does a peptide vial need?

Research library / Guides

Every vial in our catalog, with the volume and the concentration it gives.

Most vials in our catalog take 1 to 3 mL of bacteriostatic water, and the table below lists the volume for each one. The water sets the concentration, not the amount of peptide in the vial. Water and syringes do not come with a peptide order, so plan for them before you start.

01

How much water does each vial take?

These are the volumes in the Prism Labs Protocol Guide. The last column shows how many vials one 10 mL bottle of water covers at that volume.

For laboratory research use only. Mixing volumes set the concentration; they are not a dose. A bottle here is one 10 mL vial of water.

02

Does more water change the peptide?

No. The vial holds the same amount of peptide whatever you add. The water only sets how concentrated the solution is:

  • 10 mg vial with 1 mL of water: 10 mg/mL.
  • 10 mg vial with 2 mL of water: 5 mg/mL.
  • 10 mg vial with 3 mL of water: about 3.3 mg/mL.

More water gives a weaker solution, which makes small amounts easier to measure. Less water gives a stronger one. The reconstitution calculator works out any other combination.

Every lot ships with its own certificate of analysis.

03

Does water come with my order?

No. Peptide vials ship as dry powder, on their own. Prism H2O, our bacteriostatic water, is sold separately in a 10 mL vial, and you can add it on the product page.

Syringes are not included with orders. The full list of what you need, and each step of mixing: how to reconstitute peptides.

04

How many vials will one bottle cover?

Divide 10 mL by the volume each vial takes. At 2 mL a vial, one bottle covers five.

Bacteriostatic water is sterile water with a preservative, benzyl alcohol, which is why a vial can be opened more than once. The date can still run out before the water does: the CDC’s healthcare rule is to discard an opened multiple-dose vial within 28 days, unless the manufacturer gives a different date. More on that: how long bacteriostatic water lasts.

A little more clarity

Questions, answered

How much bacteriostatic water do I add to a 10 mg vial?

Between 1 and 3 mL, depending on the compound. The table on this page lists each one.

How much bacteriostatic water do I add to a 5 mg vial?

Between 1 and 3 mL, depending on the compound. The table on this page lists each one.

Can I add more or less water than the table says?

Yes. It changes the concentration, not the amount of peptide, so work out the new concentration before measuring anything.

Do I have to use the whole bottle of water?

No. Draw only the volume you need and keep the rest, within the 28-day limit once the vial has been opened.

Are these products for human use?

No. Prism Labs sells its peptides and bacteriostatic water for laboratory research use only.
