A signal from the mitochondrial genome

A mitochondrial research milestone
In 2015, researchers reported a short open reading frame within mitochondrial 12S ribosomal RNA that encoded a 16-residue peptide. An open reading frame is a stretch of genetic information that can specify a peptide sequence. This was a specific molecular discovery, not simply a new name for a mitochondrial extract.
The study combined molecular and organism-level experiments. For understanding the origin of the compound, its sequence and genetic location are the key facts to preserve when reading later descriptions.

Separate the biological sequence from the research supply
A synthetic research vial is a supplied material with its own production and testing history. The fact that a related sequence was identified in mitochondrial genetic information does not verify the contents of that vial.
The reference sequence contains 16 residues. Sequence order, end groups and the reported chemical form belong in a comparison between a paper, a reference database and a supplier specification. A matching short name is only the starting point.

What a useful research record contains
Record the full sequence and source identifier, then the vial size and lot. Read identity, purity and measured content as separate results. The identity check asks which material was detected; purity describes the reported analytical profile; content measures an amount using the laboratory method.
When following the literature, distinguish a cell experiment from an organism-level experiment. The unit of observation and the sample preparation can change the question that a result actually answers.
