From a proposed interaction to measured evidence

A 2013 Journal of the American Society of Nephrology paper investigated interactions involving cardiolipin, a lipid associated with mitochondrial membranes. The study combined biochemical experiments with an animal model.

A 2020 PNAS paper used chemical cross-linking and mass spectrometry to investigate interacting proteins. These are different experimental approaches, and the later work should be read for the specific contacts it examined rather than as a repetition of the earlier study.

Why the method changes the conclusion

A biochemical binding experiment, a cross-linking result and an organism-level observation do not measure the same event. Cross-linking can help capture molecular proximity under the experiment’s conditions; interpreting a functional consequence requires additional evidence.
