A small peptide with a copper connection

The research history starts with a small peptide; the copper complex adds another layer of chemistry. Keeping ligand identity and metal coordination separate makes the literature and the batch record easier to interpret.

A research history reaching back to 1973

Pickart and Thaler published work on a serum tripeptide in 1973. That early cell-culture research is part of the background to the glycine–histidine–lysine sequence. It is useful historical context, but the original peptide and a particular copper complex should not be treated as the same analytical record.

Later references distinguish the three-residue ligand from its association with a metal ion. The ligand sequence tells you which peptide is involved; it does not, on its own, specify every feature of the resulting complex.

One name can hide several reference structures

Copper coordination, charge state and ligand-to-metal ratio can differ between database entries. A formula for one complex should not be copied onto a differently described material simply because both entries share a familiar peptide abbreviation.

The specifications link a 1:1 copper-complex reference. That is a reference choice, not a lot-specific determination of coordination state. When precise chemistry matters, ask for the supplied-form documentation and the analytical method that addresses your question.

What to look for in the report

Distinguish peptide purity, identity and measured content from a separate question about copper composition. A general purity percentage cannot answer every one of those questions. Read the named method and the units attached to each result.

For a liquid-format comparison, also record the formulation and total volume. A report on a vial sample and a report on a premixed spray concern different submitted samples, even when the underlying peptide lineage is shared.
